SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Texas A&M Corpus Christi's track and field teams began competition at the 2018 NCAA Division I West Regional on Thursday at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif. Junior
Sashane Hanson barely missed the national meet, finishing in a tie for 14th place.
Hanson cleared the opening height (1.65m) and after a miss on the second height (1.70m), cleared on her second attempt. She then got got over the bar cleanly at 1.75 meters (5-8.75 feet) on her first attempt. She had three strong attempts at 1.80 meters (5-10.75) but was unable to hit the height on what would have been a new school and personal best. The 12th place finish also cleared 5-10.75 but Hanson was placed 14th on the countback.
Senior
Rabea Schoneborn concluded her Islander career in the 10,000 meter run in the day's final event. Schoneborn went out quickly and was in the lead pack for the first mile but was unable to hold on, finishing in 34:33.81 for 38th place overall.
On Friday,
Diamond Thomas and
Hannah McWilliams will both be competing at 4:30 p.m. Thomas is ranked No. 46 in the region in the discus with a throw of 169-5 that she set at the Victor Lopez Classic. McWilliams enters the regional with the 14th highest clearance of 13-9.25 set at the UIW Invitational.
Saturday begins with
Zhafear Ray in the men's high jump. He cleared 6-11 at the J Fred Duckett Twilight Meet and enters ranked No. 34 in the west region.
Allyson Girard will conclude the events with the 5,000 at 8:45 p.m. She has the region's 44th fastest time in the event at 16:16.61 which she ran at the Mt. Sac Relays.
