NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Competing in their second extra-innings contest of the weekend, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was unable to complete the weekend sweep against Stephen F. Austin, while falling to the Jacks 11-10 in the 10th inning.
The Islanders have made a habit out of taking the early lead against SFA, once again striking first on Sunday, on an RBI single from catcher
Drake Osborn in the second.
The Jacks were able to even the score in the bottom half before the Blue and Green opened things up in the next frame.
Andriud Martinez,
Jackson Owens and
Harrison DiNicola started the frame with three straight singles to load the bases, as
Nick Anderson drove in his first run of the day on a four-pitch walk. A fielder's choice from Ichy Burts would drive in the Blue and Green's third run of the day, as Corpus Christi took a 4-1 lead on a wild pitch.
Corpus Christi would go on to add another run in the fifth on a Jacks fielding error, before catcher
Scott Balfantz put his team up 6-2 in the eighth. Leading off the frame, the senior backstop launched the first home run of is career on a solo shot to left field, while pinch-hitting for left fielder Thomas Jeffries. Balfantz' homer is his third extra base hit of the season, and his ninth RBI of 2018.
The Jacks tied things up on four runs in the eighth, before the Islanders traded shots with their hosts on an
Enrique Sanchez Jr. single in the ninth, to go back ahead 7-6. With their backs against the wall, Stephen F. Austin once again tied things up in the bottom half of the frame, forcing the pair to go to extra innings for the second time in the past two days.
Leading off the 10th,
Dalton Stark began the frame on a double to right center, before Osborn would rack up his second RBI of the day on a single to left. The Islanders would further extend their lead on a sac fly from Owens, while Dinicola recorded his second knock of the day to score Martinez.
Holding a three-run lead, the Blue and Green seemed destined to take home the series sweep this weekend, but four Jacks hits, a pair of walks and an Islander defensive mistake gave SFA the walk-off win 11-10.
Despite dropping the Sunday contest, the Islanders do take home the series win over Stephen F. Austin after opening up the weekend with a pair of wins. Their three-game stint against the Jacks is Corpus Christi's second SLC series win of the season, and moves their conference record to 5-13.
