Huskies Outhustle Islanders

Early HBU lead turns into a loss for the Blue and Green

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After scoring first in their previous three games at Stephen F. Austin last weekend, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would be the side to fall behind early against Houston Baptist this Tuesday. The Huskies opened up a lead in the second that would last the entire night, as the Islanders split their home-and-home series with HBU in 2018 1-1.

Starting right hander Jackson Owens held the Huskies to a single run in the opening two innings, but an error in the following frame would eventually lead to a 3-0 advantage for the visiting side. Refusing to go out quietly, the Blue and Green began to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the frame, with outfielder Itchy Burts extending his hit streak to seven straight contests on a single up the middle.

After Burts stole his fifth bag of the year to get into scoring position, Owens helped his own cause on the mound with an RBI single to center. Harrison DiNicola recorded a hit in his eighth straight appearance with his single, as Owens crossed home plate on a delayed steal later in the inning to cut the Husky lead to a single run.

Holding the visitors scoreless in the fourth, HBU would mount a four-run effort in the fifth, extending their lead to 7-2. With another pair of Huskies crossing home in the sixth, Enrique Sanchez Jr. led off the bottom half of the frame with a walk, coming around to score on a Thomas Jeffries IV single and an RBI groundout from catcher Scott Balfantz

HBU added one last run in the following term, thanks to a pair of defensive errors from the Blue and Green, as the final score would reflect a 10-3 win for Houston Baptist.
  • In addition to Dinicola's and Burts' hit streaks, Owens hit for his fourth straight appearance, going 1-for-4 on the afternoon
  • Dinicola finished his night 2-for-4 from the plate, collecting multiple knocks in each of his last three games
  • Will Floyd made a perfect appearance out of the pen for the Islanders, retiring both batters he faced in the fourth, on just nine pitches
  • Tate Gillespie and Payton Bauer combined for two innings of shutout relief, with the former shrinking his ERA down to 2.31 when coming out of the pen
  • The top three hitters in the order (Burts/Owens/Dinicola) accounted for four of the Islanders eight knocks Tuesday night, with Jeffries collecting a pair of singles in the five-hole
COMING UP NEXT
The Islanders hope that their recent SLC series win over Stephen F. Austin is a sign of things to come, as they get on the road to face Central Arkansas in a three-game series this weekend in Conway, Ark. Corpus Christi is 14-14-2 against the Bears all-time, dropping its last series with UCA at home, two games to one.
