Schoneborn & Girard Tally SLC-Bests At Mt. SAC

HOUSTON, Texas/TORRANCE, Calif. - Splitting their squads between this week's Mt. SAC Relays and the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi claimed three event wins along with eight personal records over their two meets.

Distance runners Rabea Schoneborn and Allyson Girard traveled to California this Thursday and Friday in attempt to qualify for this year's NCAA West Regionals. In the first outdoor 10,000m of her career, Schoneborn ran to 12th in the race, with her time of 33:49.46, to set a new Islander record by nearly two minutes and 40 seconds. Her pace sits 10th in the west barring incoming times from this week's competitions, and 14th in the country.

Girard would claim a record of her own with a 16:16.61 in the 5000m, coming sixth in the event. Girard's time betters the previous PR she set earlier this season by nearly 11 seconds, setting a new Islander record and placing her 19th in the west. 

Over in Houston, the Corpus Christi men and women set a number of PRs, while claiming a pair of event victories in the high jump. Sashane Hanson's clearance of 1.74m beat the remainder of the field by .05m setting a new season-high for the junior. For the Blue and Green men, Zhafear Ray came within .01m of tying his own career-high, while taking first on a mark of 2.11m. Ray's performance places him within the top-20 of the NCAA West barring this week's incoming results, and puts him within .04m of tying his program's previous school best.

Three new personal bests were set in the 1500m on Saturday with freshman Valentina Campos taking fifth among the Rice Twilight field. Campos crossed the finish line in a time of 4:43.30 ranking her 15th in the Southland Conference this season. On the men's side, Cesar Gonzalez and Zach Harrach finished in 12th and 14th among college-attached runners respectively, posting times of 4:04.68 and 4:08.02. Harrach's time crushed his previous best by almost 14 seconds while Gonzalez' just edges out his all-time record of 4:04.94.

Liz Romo was the last Islander to collect an event win on the day with a time of 17:56.87 in the 5000m. The senior finished just ahead of teammate Cynthia Quiroga (18:02.11), as the pair grabbed the top-two spots on the podium.

Dominic Baptiste set his own personal record in the 800m on a time of 1:55.77, while Samantha Miller (11:29.12) and Bridgette Kozar (12:18.32) recorded their fastest times since coming to the Island.
