CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Despite its improvement at the plate this Saturday, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell to Lamar for a second straight afternoon in an 11-6 final.
The Cardinal bats got going early, with a four-count of hits in the opening inning. The visiting side loaded the bases before recording three straight singles, taking a 4-0 advantage into the second.
The Islanders struck back in the bottom half of frame number two, loading the bases on a walk, a single and a fielding error.
Cam Boudreaux drove in his fourth run of the year after drawing the first of his two walks on the afternoon.
RJ Ruiz followed up Boudreaux's effort with a sac fly to score
Thomas Jeffries IV from third, as the Blue and Green managed to cut their opponent's lead in half before the end of the second.
The two clubs traded blows in the third frame, with Lamar posting another three runs in the top half of the term.
Jackson Owens recorded a single on his second at bat of the afternoon, to put himself on base for teammate
Nick Anderson. Anderson responded with a no-doubter to left field, bringing his side back within three runs. The outfielder's home run was his fourth shot of the year, tying his total from the previous season, and sitting just one short of first baseman
Harrison DiNicola (5) for a team-high.
Corpus Christi continued to chip away at the LU lead, with Owens driving in his side's fifth run of the day on an RBI double down the left field line.
Itchy Burts drove in his sixth run of the past two weeks on a sac fly to left field, while making his seventh consecutive start, as the Blue and Green brought themselves within a single run.
Despite the Islanders' surging offense, the Cardinals answered back with a four-run sixth inning to secure a Saturday victory, as both sides were held scoreless in the final three-and-a-half frames.
Cody LeCompte provided a pair of shutout frames to close things for the Blue and Green, but the Islander offense was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, as the final score reflected an 11-6 advantage for visiting Lamar.
- Jeffries and Owens each recorded a pair of knocks on the day, with the latter hitting .400 over his past six contests. Jeffries is on a three-game hit streak, crossing home plate four times over that span
- Anderson, Harrison DiNicola, Scott Balfantz and RJ Ruiz were all hit by pitches on Saturday, tying the season-high they set against UT-Arlington at the start of the year
