McWilliams Tallies Qualifying Performance

Pole vaulter Hannah McWilliams sets a new program record, while tallying one of the top NCAA performances of 2018

AUSTIN, Texas - Already owning the top Texas A&M-Corpus Christi mark in program history, senior Hannah McWilliams broke another Islander outdoor record at the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this Friday, clearing a height of 4.15m in the pole vault.

McWilliams' mark falls just short of the 4.17m she tallied during the indoor season earlier this year, and is far and away the top mark in the Southland Conference this season. The Portland, Texas native finished ninth overall in the event, and now sits in a tie for fourth in the NCAA West Region and seventh in the country, barring incoming results from other competitions.

Sprinter Sierra Pruitt beat her personal best by one-one hundredth of a second in Austin, posting a time of 11.88 in the 100m. After running an 11.89 at the UTSA Invitational just two weeks prior, the junior still holds her fourth place spot in the Southland Conference, while teammate Mikayla Roell's PR of 12.18 stands 18th.

High jumper Zhafear Ray would be the only men's performer for the Blue and Green on Friday, claiming 10th in his first competition of the outdoor season. Ray cleared 2.00m on the afternoon, jumping into sixth place in the SLC. Fellow Corpus Christi athlete Sashane Hanson turned in a 1.68 in her high jump event, claiming fourth overall on the day.

The Islander relay team of Kendall Rodriguez, Tashonna Williams, Makalah Griffin and Pruitt recorded the second fastest 4x400m time in program history on day three of this year's Texas Relays, as their combined time of 3:51.22 was good for 29th.

Diamond Thomas was the lone Islander athlete to take to the circle on the day, coming in 15th in the women's section B shot put, with her toss of 12.89m.

The Islanders complete their time in the Texas capital this Saturday, competing in a pair of events. Thomas will close out her weekend with the women's discus at 11 AM, while the men's relay team of Will Maraggia, Jaran Cadena, Dominic Baptiste and Steven Galli will compete in their first 4x800m of the year.
