CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took its first loss at Whataburger Field this season, falling to No. 13 Texas A&M by a final score 5-3. The Islanders outhit the Aggies 9-7 on the night, as
Jackson Owens collected a team-high three knocks against their in-state rival.
Tuesday's scoring opened on a two-run shot from Aggie shortstop Braden Shewmake, as the visiting side took a 3-0 lead heading into the third inning. Leading off for the Islanders in the frame,
Enrique Sanchez Jr. tallied a single to start the inning, scoring just a few at bats later on a
Nick Anderson single. Anderson drove in 10 runs in five contests last week, picking up nine hits in his previous six appearances.
Texas A&M collected another two runs during the fourth to go ahead by four, before
RJ Ruiz knocked a single up the middle to score
Luke Marbach from third. The Blue and Green rounded out their scoring in the seventh, as
Jackson Owens crossed home plate on a
Drake Osborn groundout and pull within two.
Trailing 5-3, Owens would reach first for the fourth time during the ninth inning, bringing the tying run to plate. The Aggies closer Nolan Hoffman retired the last two batters of the night in order however, as Corpus Christi finished on the wrong side of the night's decision.
- Owens went 3-for-4 with a walk on the afternoon, riding a seven-game hit streak. The third baseman's batting average has jumped from .314 to .351 during his current streak
- Collectively, the Islanders first four hitters finished 7-for-15 (.467) at the plate with four bases on balls
- A.G. Ayala has yet to give up an earned run this season, tossing two shutout innings against the Aggies on Tuesday. The Blue and Green freshman is on a streak of eight shutout appearances
- Seven different players recorded knocks for the Islanders, with Harrison Dinicola stretching his own hit streak to 11. The first baseman has also drawn one or more walks in each of his past five appearances
COMING UP NEXT
The Islanders have a quick turnaround with a Thursday contest against New Orleans. UNO and Corpus Christi meet up for a three-game series at Chapman Field, winning last season's series two contests to one.
