CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After spotting visiting New Orleans some early runs, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was unable to complete a late inning comeback this Thursday, falling to the Privateers by a final score of 13-8.
With UNO taking a 3-0 lead in the first two innings of play, center fielder
Dalton Stark cut into that advantage in the second with an RBI groundout. The Islanders would cede another five unanswered runs to the Privateers however, getting back on the scoresheet in the fourth.
After loading the bases in the frame, shortstop
RJ Ruiz collected his first RBI on the day on a walk, while fellow senior
Jackson Owens drove teammates Stark and
Thomas Jeffries IV across home plate on a single later in the inning. With New Orleans' lead cut to 8-4, the Blue and Green appeared to be back in striking distance, but the Privateer bats continued their hot streak, posting another five runs over the proceeding three frames.
With just six outs remaining for the Islanders, the side hung a three-spot in the eighth on three hits and a trio of walks. The home team loaded the bases yet again in the inning, before an
Enrique Sanchez Jr. single brought in his side's fifth run of the night. A
Harrison DiNicola walk and a
Nick Anderson single would bring in another pair of runs for the Blue and Green, as the two clubs entered the final stanza with a six-run differential.
Corpus Christi scored their last run of the contest during the ninth on three singles from Jeffries,
Scott Balfantz and Sanchez. The Privateers' lead proved to be insurmountable for Coach Malone's side however, as the Blue and Green were forced to submit to a 13-8 loss.
- Despite taking the loss, the Islanders collected 11 hits on the night, with the first six batters in the order accounting for 10 of those knocks
- Thomas Jeffries mimicked his career performance at OU earlier this year, tying personal bests in at bats (5), hits (4) and runs scored (3)
- Dinicola continues to rake for the Islanders, extending his hit streak to 12 straight and collecting two walks on the afternoon
- Sanchez made his fifth consecutive start this Thursday, while turning in the second multi-hit effort of his past three appearances
- Jackson Owens continued his own hit-streak on to eight games, he's 8-for-18 over his last four appearances (.445)
