LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went back to Lubbock for a third time this year, competing in the Texas Tech Shootout this Friday and Saturday. The Islanders set six new program bests on day two of this weekend's meet, with three of those performances coming form the school's previous record-holders.
Hannah McWilliams has thoroughly established herself as the best women's pole vault in school history, further improving on the record she set earlier this year (4.02). McWilliams cleared a height of 4.17m to take first place this Saturday in Lubbock, while her mark moves her into 20th in the country, and just outside a qualifying spot for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. The senior sits behind only Stephen F. Austin's Carson Dingler for the top spot in the conference this year, with no other athlete in the SLC achieving better than a 3.92m in 2018.
Just two weeks removed from tying Corpus Christi's all-time mark in the 60m (7.54), junior sprinter
Sierra Pruitt crushed her school's previous best in the 200m with a 24.52. Pruitt's time was good enough to earn her ninth among collegiate runners at the Texas Tech Shootout and was more than a tenth of a second better than the previous Island record. She now sits third in the SLC overall.
Current Southland Conference leaderÂ
Sashane Hanson continued to boast her reputation as the best Islander women's high-jumper in history with her performance this past Saturday. The Jamaican national bested her own record-setting mark from two years ago, with a clearance of 1.77m over the weekend. Hanson finished fourth among college-attached athletes, and remains the only female athlete in the SLC to have broken 1.70m this year. She holds nine of Corpus Christi's top-10 indoor performances all-time, as her 1.77m hop is tied for 37th-best in the country, barring results from other meets competed in this week.
After setting a new Blue and Green record in the 200m in his previous trip to Tech, sophomore
Terrion Spivey continued to improve up his personal best with a 21.98 finish for 13th overall. The Desoto, Texas native crossed the finish line ahead of athletes from Texas Tech, Arizona, Arizona State and Southland-rival Abilene Christian.
Newcomer Rabea Schoneborn instantly placed herself as one of the top athletes in the SLC this week, with a 9:36.95 in the Texas Tech Shootout 3000m. Not only did Schoneborn's time beat the school record her current teammate
Allyson Girard set earlier this season, but it also won the senior her first event, in her first meet, with Corpus Christi.
Rounding out the Islanders six school bests, the women's 4x400m relay team of
Kendall Rodriguez,
Tashonna Williams,
Sierra Pruitt and
Makalah Griffin combined for a time of 3:51.98. The quartet's time beats the previous Islander record by just over a second and placed them ahead of both of Abilene Christian's competing teams, in eighth.
Competing alongside Pruitt, Blue and Green runner
Tashonna Williams set a PR with a 25.12 in the 200m, placing 17th amongst college athletes.Â
Zhafear Ray tied his season-best mark in the high jump as well, as his 1.99m clearance came in seventh overall.Â
