Baseball Hosts MLB Scouting Combine

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi baseball program showcased a variety of upperclassmen talent to a wide array of MLB organizations late Tuesday afternoon at Chapman Field, including scouts from franchises ranging from San Francisco to New York City. The Islanders put on a well-coordinated baseball display for just over two hours, initially working out individually before leading into a fully-simulated game environment.

All in all, the Scout Day proved a success with just over 20 organizations sending evaluators. After a short warm-up session, the players rotated into individual batting practice and followed up with outfield and infield drills. The ensuing period consisted of a 60-yard dash, turning double-plays and working to kill attempted steals with home plate to second-base throws. The Islanders wrapped up the combine with simulated game conditions, allowing both batters and pitchers an atmosphere closer to full-speed play.

Under head coach Scott Malone, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has compiled a notable group of draft selections in recent years, overseeing 10 of the Islanders' 12 total draftees since kicking off his tenure in 2006. Last year, Aaron Hernandez set the program record for highest MLB draft selection as the Los Angeles Angels grabbed the sophomore pitcher in the third round.
