Volleyball heads to Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi volleyball team will play a pair of midweek Southland Conference matches this week. On Tuesday, the Islanders head to Huntsville, Texas, to face Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+. Thursday, the team returns to the Island to take on Houston Baptist University on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a 3-1 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word at home last Thursday.

- The Islanders and the Bearkats split last year's regular season meetings with each team successfully defending their home court back on Oct. 21, 2017.
- In the first matchup, SHSU pulled out a five-set win in a back and forth contest that included a 33-31 first set win and a 17-15 final set victory.
- The Islanders had more kills (76), assists (69) and digs (89) than the Bearkats but SHSU hit .232 with six less attacking errors in the win.
- A&M-Corpus Christi got a triple-double from Krystyn Nicholson with 60 assists, 13 digs and 10 kills. Britany Gilpin had 20 kills and 17 digs.
- In the rematch at the Dugan Wellness Center on Nov. 9, the Islanders swept the Bearkats, 25-18, 25-21 and 27-25.
- SHSU was limited to just a .168 attack percentage and was forced into 17 errors.
- Madison Green had 10 kills, 10 digs, two assists, a block and a service ace.
- The two programs met in the first round of the Southland Tournament with the Islanders winning, 3-1.
- A&M-Corpus Christi outhit Sam Houston, .327 to .212.
- Green had 22 digs, 12 kills, two service aces, two assists and a block.
- Chloe Simon had 11 kills and a pair of digs.
- The Islanders beat Houston Baptist, 3-0, last season on Oct. 26, at the Dugan Wellness Center.
- Green and Simon paced the team offensively in kills with 12 and 10, respectively.
- Entering the week in conference play, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leads the league in service aces per set (2.06), ranks second in assists per set at 12.76 and is second in kills at 13.65 kills per set.
- Rachel Young is sixth in the conference with a .375 attack percentage in league play.
- Green is third in service aces per set at 0.54 and is also fourth with 9.62 assists per set.
- Kaylee Payne's 4.24 digs per set is the seventh best mark in league play.
- Green recorded the conference's first triple-double of the year, notching 33 assists, 12 dig and 10 kills in a five-set loss to South Florida on Aug. 31 at LSU. Only two other Southland players have a triple-double this season.
- Green has been named to the Mizzou, South Carolina and Islander All-Invitational teams this season. Sam Dumity earned All-Islander Invitational accolades as well.
- This year's roster features three juniors, four sophomores, eight freshman and no seniors.
