CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi men's tennis team won a pair of flights on Sunday on the final day of the Contender CrossFit Islander Open at the Thomas J Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Sunday. This year's event included competitors from Rice, UTRGV, Incarnate Word and Laredo Community College and featured two doubles flights and four singles flights.
Thomas Rodrigues Lopes and
Okkie Kellerman started the day with a victory over Kaufman and Hutchings from UTRGV, 8-1, to claim the A doubles draw.
Thibault Frumholz and
Kyohei Yamanaka beat UTRGV's Sarradin and Schmit, 8-6, to take fifth place in the A draw.
Kyohei Yamanaka claimed a 7-5, 6-4, victory over Kaufman from UTRGV to claim the B singles draw.
Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas battled tough against Evans from UIW in the A singles final but fell, 6-2. 6-3, to take second place. In the third place match, Rodrigues beat Rice's Abdel-Aziz, 6-2, 6-4.
In the B singles draw, Kellerman came back to beat M. Grijalava from Laredo, 7-5, 6-2, to take third place.
Jonathan Christie had a back and forth battle with Z. Kohrs from UTRGV. After falling in the first set, 7-5, Christie battled back to win the second, 6-3. But Kohrs held on in the third and took the title match in the C draw, 6-2.
Chad Nguyen played for the D draw singles title against R. Mere from Laredo, but fell, 6-2, 6-4.
Nguyen and Christie also took fourth in the B doubles draw, falling to the team of Kohrs and Loyd from UTRGV.
This will conclude the 2018 men's tennis fall season. The Islander women will compete at the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational starting on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Huntsville, Texas.
As a program, the Islanders have reached 10 NCAA Tournaments in program history and captured 22 Southland titles in the last 12 years.
