CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis, one of the elite programs in Southland Conference history, heads to Prairie View A&M to take on the Panthers this Wednesday. The match is slated as a double header, with the first match at 11 AM and the second at 3 PM. Both the men and women will compete at the event.
"We are very excited for the opportunity to compete and better ourselves tomorrow," says Coach Steve Moore. "We have a lot of respect for Prairie View and Coach Duane Williams."
"Our mindset for every match is for each player to max out the things they can control," he continues, "and play every point with intensity. That is our challenge tomorrow on the road. I love the character of this team, and the leadership from our seniors! I'm excited for this journey together as a team."
Islanders tennis looks to build on the success they've had through previous years. The men have won 10 Southland Conference titles in 11 years. Only three other sports in the 57-year history of the Southland Conference (SFA basketball, Lamar track, and Lamar golf) have accomplished such a feat. The women's record over the past two seasons is 45-4, making three NCAA Championships in the last four years, with two of the losses coming from those tournaments.
The men are looking to earn their first win of the season after falling short to No. 8 Texas in the season opener. They look to rally behind senior captain Biyik Akinshemoyin, who's playing in his second match as a senior, as they look to best the Panthers.
The women, on the other hand, are playing their first match of the spring season. Two champion seniors, team captains Hortense Boscher and Jelena Dzinic, play the first match of their senior year. Freshmen Luna Dormet and Carolina Bulotovic play their first match as Islanders.
Following Wednesday's match at Prairie View A&M, the women then head to Houston for a Friday match. Defeating both teams last year, they look to do the same this week, and gain traction for another successful year.
