AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team pushed No. 2 seed Texas from the opening point Friday, battling through a tightly contested doubles session and showing resilience across the courts before falling 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
Fresh off a Southland Conference Tournament title, A&M-Corpus Christi (17-5) brought early energy and composure against a Texas squad that entered the match ranked No. 1 nationally according to the ITA Rankings, though they were seeded No. 2 overall for the NCAA Tournament.
This marked the 18
th trip to the NCAA Championships for Islanders Tennis after the latest title took the combined program total to 38 conference championships. It adds to the lengthy resume the Islanders maintain as one of the winningest programs across all sports in the Southland Conference.
The tone was set in doubles, where all three courts were competitive deep into play. The Islanders were within reach at every position, including a back-and-forth battle on court one that went unfinished with
Omar Suarez and
Etienne Marty still within striking distance. Even as Texas ultimately secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three, the Islanders forced extended games and refused to yield momentum easily.
That fight carried into singles. While Texas claimed three courts in straight sets to clinch the match, the Islanders continued to apply pressure throughout the lineup. Marty, in particular, was locked in a tight contest at No. 3 singles, trading blows in a first set that remained on serve deep into play. Suarez also pushed early in his match at No. 2.
The Islanders close the season at 17-5, capping the year with a Southland title and an NCAA Tournament appearance to finish on the biggest stage in college tennis once again.
