Corpus Christi Corrals Cowgirls

Double-doubles from Gilpin and Green lead Islanders to 5-0

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Brittany Gilpin and Madison Green each turned in double-double performances as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi captured its 43-consecutive victory over Southland Conference foes with a 25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory over McNeese Saturday afternoon.
 
Gilpin led the Islanders (8-8, 5-0) with 15 kills while digging up 14 attacks.  The reigning Southland Player of the Year hit .333 while committing just three errors in the match. She also added three blocks defensively. Green was just as impactful with 10 kills and 16 digs while hitting a blistering .500 on the match.
 
It was not just Gilpin and Green, however, as Madeleine Doud delivered a season-best 11 kills. On the defensive side, libero Madison Woods capped a fantastic week with 26 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Islanders came out hot, hitting .323 in the opening set. Kristyn Nicholson led the set with five kills while the Islanders held McNeese to just .156 hitting.
 
The Cowgirls answered back as five attack errors and another five service errors gave McNeese 10 free points in the second set for a 25-18 win.
 
After the break, the Islanders found their groove, racing to a 15-5 advantage. A 6-0 run from McNeese would pull the Cowgirls within one at 18-17. McNeese would take a 22-21 lead , before the Islanders regained their footing and kills from Green and Doud ended a 25-23 third frame.
 
In the fourth, the Blue and Green hit .333, marking their best performance of the day. Gilpin floored six of her 15 kills while Green racked up nine digs in the decisive set.
 
WOODS WOWING
 
Saturday capped a masterful week for libero Madison Woods. In three matches, Woods produced a total of 70 digs, including a career-high 26 against the Cowgirls.
 
Woods made a strong case for defensive player of the week honors by averaging 6.36 digs per set over the three matches.
 
DOUBLE-DIGIT ACES
 
The Islanders once again piled up points at the service line with 10 aces in the match. Nicholson led the way with a trio of aces while Woods and Camryn Tucker each had a pair.
 
Saturday marked the second time the Islanders have produced double-digit aces.
 
THE NUMBERS
 
>> Kristyn Nicholson just missed a double-double with nine kills and 42 assists.
>> Chloe Thorpe had four kills on just nine swings.
>> Doud and Gilpin each had three blocks while Green, Nicholson and Thorpe had two apiece.
 
ON THE ROAD
 
The Islanders now hit the road for a tough week as they head to Central Arkansas Thursday before facing Northwestern State on Saturday.
