Volleyball Opens Busy Week at UIW

Islanders head to San Antonio Tuesday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After running their Southland Conference winning streak to 40 matches, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi returns to action Tuesday at UIW.
 
The Islanders (5-8, 2-0) hold the nation's second-longest winning streak against conference opponents heading into Tuesday's tilt with the Cardinals (2-7, 1-1). First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the McDermott Center in San Antonio.
 
ISLANDER INSIGHT
 
>> Brittany Gilpin recorded double-digit kills in each of the first two Southland matches last weekend. Gilpin now has 18-straight Southland matches with at least 10 kills.
>>  The Islanders completed an improbable rally Saturday, overcoming a 9-3 fifth-set deficit at New Orleans.
>> Mallory Moran produced a career-high 18 kills in the victory at New Orleans.
>> Through the opening weekend of play, the Islanders sit third in the league in hitting percentage at .259.
 
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
 
UIW enters Tuesday's matchup at 2-7 on the season and 1-1 after the opening weekend of conference action. Four of those seven losses have been in five sets, including their defeat at New Orleans on Thursday.
 
The Cardinals defeated Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday in four sets.
 
>> Autumn Lockley leads the Cardinals at 2.87 kills per set.
>> Bryaunea Hall adds 1.87 kills per set and averages 0.84 blocks.
>> UIW leads the league in blocking after the first weekend of conference matches, averaging 3.22 per set over the weekend.
 
SERIES HISTORY
 
The Islanders are 7-1 all-time against UIW, including a perfect 5-0 record as Southland foes. UIW's lone win came in 2000, the first season of Islanders volleyball.
 
The Islanders swept UIW and claimed a 3-1 road win in two meetings last season.
 
UP NEXT
 
Corpus Christi returns to the Dugan Wellness Center to host Nicholls on Thursday and McNeese on Saturday.
 
The Islanders will celebrate their 2016 Southland Conference Championship on Thursday at the SLC home opener. Saturday will feature free t-shirts for the first 150 fans in attendance.
