Showdown Setback

Errors plague Islanders in loss at UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas – An onslaught of errors from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi left the Islanders fighting an uphill battle as UTRGV swept the Islanders 25-19, 25-22, 25-19, Wednesday night in the South Texas Showdown presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.

Despite leading the match in kills 40-37, the Islanders fell victim to their own miscues with 27 errors on the night. The errors led to 20 free points for UTRGV over the match as the Vaqueros committed just seven errors.

Mallory Moran led the match with 12 kills. Kristyn Nicholson and Madeleine Doud added another seven kills each for the Islanders. Their efforts were not enough to overcome the errors, however, as the Islanders hit just .087 on the night.

The Islanders also led the Vaqueros in digs, racking up 70 in the match. Madison Woods piled up 20 to lead all players while Madison Green neared her career-high with 12. Freshman Jenna Krenek produced a career-high nine digs in the loss.

Errors plagued the Islanders Wednesday night as 11 miscues in the first set and another nine in the second led to a 2-0 hole. At the break, the Islanders and UTRGV were level in kills, but Corpus Christi committed 16 more errors than the Vaqueros.

The error-issues reared up again in the final set as the Blue and Green committed seven more in the 25-19 set.

Bojana Mitrovic and Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV with 11 kills apiece. The Vaqueros now hold a thre-point lead in the South Texas Showdown.
