AUSTIN, Texas – Playing away from Chapman Field for the final time in 2017, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team battled the University of Texas in a nationally televised bout on the Longhorn Network. The Longhorns used a run in the fourth and two in sixth to edge the Islanders 3-0.
It was apparent early that pitching would be the focus of the day. The Islanders (11-34) gave the ball to
Liz Carter (9-18), who was playing in her hometown for the final time. The Longhorns (29-20) countered with staff day featuring four pitchers.
Carter was electric, fanning a pair in the first inning, while getting ahead in the count on the first four batters. Texas put runners on the paths in each of the first three innings, but the defense for the Blue and Green kept it scoreless.
Texas broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Randel Leahy lifted a 1-1 delivery over the wall in left to put the hosts up 1-0. Carter went back to work by striking out her fourth batter of the day to end the inning.
Texas added insurance runs in the sixth. Leahy came home from first on a throwing error by the Blue and Green. Bekah Alcozer made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly on the next at-bat to plate Kelli Hanzel from third.
Carter,
Kandace Johnson,
Megan Mitchell and
Lexi Shaw recorded a hit for Corpus Christi. Carter struck out four and gave up three runs on eight hits.
Brooke Bolinger (7-2) earned the win for work over the final three innings, as the Longhorn staff fanned seven in the four-hit shutout.
