HOUSTON – A trio of records came crashing down as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field program competed at the Houston Alumni Invitational on Saturday.
Diamond Thomas and
Aaron Rosales put their names at the top of the Islanders record book in the hammer throw for women and men, respectively, while
Chloe Young set a program best in the 100-meter hurdles.
In her second homecoming meet of the year, Thomas set her third record of the season with her mark on Saturday. The Houston native's toss of 49.52 smashed the previous record set by teammate
Kaelin Simmons by nearly a meter and a half. Thomas broke the school record in the outdoor shot put at the Houston Cougar Spring Break Invitational and the indoor shot put at the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Thomas added a seventh-place finish in the discus.
Rosales bested his own school record in the hammer by half a meter. The sophomore set the 47.85-meter mark with his first throw of the day. For Rosales, it was the third time he broke the program record in the hammer this year.
Per usual, Young left the starting blocks as the school record holder and crossed the finish line after 100 meters and hurdles with the same title, only a faster time. The San Antonio native shaved .21 seconds off her record with a time of 14.04 seconds on Saturday.
Logan Robinson and
Zhafear Ray posted a pair of second-place finishes. Robinson climbed up the leaderboard with his final-round heave of 52.46 meters, a new personal best and the fourth furthest in school history. Ray cleared the 2.03-meter bar to finish as the top collegiate performer in the high jump.
Kendall Rodriguez notched the ninth quickest time in school history in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best 1:04.92. Adding to the personal bests in the hurdles,
Mason Townley and
Kevin Jaymez finished fourth and fifth in the men's race.
Morgan McCutchen narrowly missed her personal best in the 1,500-meter run as she placed sixth.
Logan Jorgensen notched the third best mark in school history in the pole vault at 4.60 meters.
The relay teams had a solid day in Houston, as three finished in the top-eight. The 4x400-meter relay teams chipped in a pair of fifth-place finished for the men and women, while the women's 4x100-meter squad placed eighth.
