KATY, Texas – With 6:58 to play in the fourth quarter, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team saw its 12-point lead shaved to four.
Kassie Jones scored the next five points to spark a 17-10 run to close the game, as the Islanders (13-17, 8-10) knocked off Northwestern State, 57-46, in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
"I was very proud of our team effort," head coach
Royce Chadwick said. "We didn't execute the way we wanted to execute in the first half. I think Northwestern State had a lot to do with that. Our defense kept us in the game. I thought we executed our game plan well on the defensive side of the ball. In the second half, we tried to get some looks for our shooters and get our high-low going, and I thought we were successful at that.
"We made plays when we needed to make them. We blocked some shots on defense. On offense, we penetrated, kicked and made free throws down the stretch. We did all the little things to advance. We're very fortunate to that we are moving on. Northwestern State is a talented program with good scorers. They had a very good season, but I'm proud of what our players had to do in order to move on."

Brittany Mbamalu chipped in 12, as Jones finished with nine points.
