ABILENE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team dropped a pair of games to Abilene Christian on Friday night, 11-0 and 7-2.
GAME 1
In the opener, the Islanders (6-22, 1-7) strung together five hits, but could not overcome 11 runs on 13 hits by the Wildcats (20-14, 10-1).
ACU scored all of its runs in the opening three innings. Brianna Barnhill homered to right in the first, before the hosts added a trio of runs in the second. The Wildcats broke the game open with six runs on six hits and one error in the third.
Liz Carter (5-12) took the loss after giving up 11 runs, 10 earned on 13 hits with four strikeouts. Sidney Holman (13-3) tossed a shutout behind seven punchouts.
Savannah Sandoval went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot, her second straight multi-hit game.
GAME 2
Corpus Christi found itself in five-run hole through three innings in the nightcap. The Wildcats scored two runs in the first and second, before adding a pair over the next two frames.
Mackinzee Griebel put the Islanders on the board in the fourth.
Candice Hadd reached first on a throwing error by the catcher on a dropped third strike. Griebel broke for home to make it 6-1 ACU.
After the Wildcats extended their lead back out to six, Griebel generated another run in the fifth. This time, the senior singled in Sandoval with a chopper to the shortstop.
Kandace Johnson (1-10) pitched her 10th complete game of the season in the loss. The Atascocita native surrendered seven runs, five earned, and struck out five. Hannah Null (7-11) scattered five hits and fanned six for the victory.
Griebel went 2-for-4 for her sixth multi-hit game of the year, while Sandoval drilled a triple, the first of her career, in the seventh.
ON DECK
The two sides will wrap up the series tomorrow at noon.
