SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis finished off the UTSA Cup with a perfect 6-0 mark on Sunday afternoon.
"I thought the guys showed tremendous heart and grit on the last day," said Director of Tennis
Steve Moore. "The last day is all about fitness and heart and our guys were very strong today. This is all just part of a long journey about being hardcore players that are committed to the athletic discipline lifestyle and the team is a true family.
"I thought we took a good step forward this weekend and improved a few percentage points," Moore continued. "I was especially impressed with the level and improvement of Carlos. He has added a few chess pieces to his game and is playing much lower and more physical."
In doubles action,
Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas and
Daiki Tanabe paired up for 6-3 win over UT Arlington's Kommaraju and Simo.
Biyik Akinshemoyin and
Jonathan Christie also picked up a doubles victory to start the day, taking a 6-4 match over a split pairing from UT Arlington and UTSA.
In singles play, Pedrosa led the Islanders in the top spot of the order, rolling past Eduard Simo. Pedrosa won in straight sets, going 6-2, 6-0 to finish 2-1 on the weekend.
Tanabe slotted in at No. 2 and earned a three-set victory behind a thrilling comeback. After dropping the first set 4-6, Tanabe forced a super tiebreak with a 6-4 set of his own to level the match. In the super tiebreak third, the freshman earned a 10-7 victory.
Akinshemoyin and Christie each earned straight set victories as well to complete the Islanders' perfect day. Akinshemoyin claimed a 7-6 first set before winning 6-4 in the second to down Sansidh Kommaraju of UT Arlington. Christie would claim his second victory of the weekend with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Leon Hein of UTSA.
