SAN ANTONIO – Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas and
Jonathan Christie earned singles victories to highlight day two of the UTSA Cup for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis.
Christie opened the day with a three-set victory over John King of UTSA. One of the Islander newcomers this season, Christie split the first two sets both in 6-4 fashion, before earning the win with a 10-7 super tiebreak.
Pedrosa meanwhile bounced back from a 7-5, 7-5 setback in the morning singles round to claim a three-set win in the afternoon. The Islander dropped a hotly-contested opening match to Constantin Franzen from Baylor before downing Juri Reckow from UTSA. Pedrosa rallied back after a 7-5 first set loss to win 6-1 in the second and 10-6 in the super tiebreak to claim the match.
In doubles play, Pedrosa paired with
Daiki Tanabe as the Islanders fell 6-2 to Reckow and Carrillo of UTSA. Christie paired with
Biyik Akinshemoyin for their doubles match, falling 6-3 to Borunda and Bugiga.
The freshman Tanabe suffered a 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 loss to Baylor's Akos Kotorman in the first singles match of the day. Tanabe would fall 6-4, 6-4 to Bugiga of UTSA in the afternoon.
Akinshemoyin also dropped a pair of singles matches, both in third-set super tiebreakers. The Islander fell 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 to Johnny Goodwin from Texas before enduring a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 defeat at the hands of Carrillo from UTSA in the nightcap.
The Islanders will conclude play at the UTSA Cup on Sunday.
