CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team hits the road for the first time in four weeks this weekend for a pair of games against Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana. Kickoff with the Colonels is set for Friday at 4 p.m. in Thibodaux, La., while the match against the Lady Lions is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
THE OPENING KICK
• After the longest home stand in program history, A&M-Corpus Christi hits the road for a pair of games this weekend. The Islanders face Nicholls on Friday at 4 p.m., the earliest Friday match of the year, before playing Southeastern La. on Sunday at 1 p.m.
• Heading into the weekend, the Blue and Green are just three points out of the sixth spot in the Southland Conference standings. The Islanders qualified for their first ever trip to the conference tournament last year in fifth place.
• After a slow start to the year, the offense has started to click for the Islanders. A&M-Corpus Christi has fired more than 10 shots in two of the last three matches, bagging goals in consecutive games for the second time this season.
SERIES HISTORY
• Nicholls holds a 3-0 record over the Blue and Green.
• Despite a trio of losses, every game between the Islanders and Colonels has been a one-goal affair, with this weekend's hosts topping A&M-Corpus Christi 2-1 at the Jack last year.
• The Islanders are 1-3 against Southeastern Louisiana through four meetings.
• A&M-Corpus Christi produced what could be considered the biggest win in program history last year against the Lady Lions, as a pair of second half goals lifted the Blue and Green to a 2-1 victory. The Islanders went on to win four more matches and qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament.
• In the first postseason game in program history, the Islanders fell to Southeastern Louisiana 3-1.
LAST MATCHES
• A&M-Corpus Christi faced Stephen F. Austin last Friday, dropping the match 5-1.
•
Brooke Erdmann tallied lone goal for the Blue and Green on a corner kick in the 77th minute. The goal was her third career goal on the Island, moving her to third on the all-time goal scorers' list.
• On Sunday, a pair of second-half goals for Sam Houston State countered a game-tying
Chayse Bauer strike from outside the box, leading to a 3-1 victory for the Bearkats.
• Bauer's goal came on an assist from
Yvette Franco, the fourth of her career. The Corpus Christi native is tied for the most assists all-time on the Island to go with her goal and point records for A&M-Corpus Christi.
SCOUTING NICHOLLS
• Still looking for their first conference win, the Colonels are 3-4-1 overall with an 0-2-1 record in Southland action.
• Jess Coates and Kristy Helmers have led the way for Nicholls in the goal scoring category with six and four scores, respectively. The Colonels have averaged 2.88 goals per game this season.
• Three goalkeepers have appeared in net for Nicholls this year, but Roosa Hurmerinta has accounted for seven starts and a 2-4 record between the pipes.
SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN LA.
• The Lady Lions are 4-6-1 this season with 1-2 Southland record. After defeating McNeese in the conference opener, Southeastern La. dropped both road games against Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian last week.
• Despite leading the conference in shooting with 19.5 attempts per match, SLU ranks seventh in the SLC with 1.36 goals per game.
• Last year's First Team All-Southland goalkeeper, Hope Sabadash, has started all 11 games for SLU, conceding 17 goals on 148 shots faced.
