CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team is on its way north to face a pair of ranked opponents in the HotelRed Invitational hosted by Wisconsin on Saturday and Sunday.
In the second week of the non-conference season, the Islanders are set to challenge No. 2 Wisconsin and No. 18 San Diego in Madison, Wi.
The Blue and Green open the weekend with a 4 p.m. matchup versus San Diego on Saturday afternoon. The Toreros are 1-1 on the season after defeating No. 11 Stanford and falling to No. 3 Minnesota in the first week.
Sunday brings a 1 p.m. matchup with the host Badgers who are currently ranked second in the AVCA Coaches' Poll. The contest will mark the highest-ranked opponent the Islanders have ever faced. The Blue and Green last faced a ranked team in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last season, falling to Texas A&M 3-0.
WHO TO WATCH
• Outside hitter
Brittany Gilpin leads the Islanders with 37 kills after the opening weekend. Gilpin's strong performance at the Baylor Invitational earned her the first Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season.
• Middle blocker
Madi Fitzsimmons ranks second in the Southland with 1.3 blocks per set. Fitzsimmons tallied 13 total blocks in last week's tournament.
• Freshman
Claire Karsten looks to build off a strong opening weekend which included double-digit kills in two of the three matches.
COMING HOME
Following the two matches in Wisconsin this weekend, the Islanders return to the Dugan Wellness Center Tuesday, Sep. 6, to open the home schedule against UTRGV. The match is the first home event of the South Texas Showdown presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. with the first 300 fans receiving a free South Texas Showdown t-shirt.
