Islanders Drop Pair at Rice Invite

HOUSTON – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi dropped a pair of matches at the Rice Adidas Invitational II as the Islanders fell to Rice and Yale by scores of 3-1.

The pair of losses drop the Islanders to 5-6 on the season as Southland Conference play begins Tuesday. In the first match of the day, the Blue and Green captured the first set against Owls before Rice rolled off three consecutive sets for the victory. The Owls claimed the match 25-21, 22-25, 15-25, 27-29.

Senior Morgan Carlson led the Islanders with 18 kills, the most by any player in the match. Brittany Gilpin notched her sixth double-double of the season, recording 11 kills and 14 digs. Kristyn Nicholson also recorded a double-double with 42 assists and 15 digs.

Offensively, the Islanders hit just .153 in the match, commiting 29 errors.

In the nightcap, the Islanders fell to Yale 17-25, 25-14, 16-25, 23-25. For the second time on the day, the Islanders struggled on the attack, hitting just .140 on the match.

Again, Carlson led the Blue and Green, knocking down 14 kills. Much like the morning match, both Gilpin and Nicholson compiled double-doubles, but it simply was not enough as Yale rode 13 kills from Kristin Tott and 12 from Brittani Steinberg.

Carlson was named to the All-Tournament team after racking up 32 kills in eight sets.

Libero Kate Klepetka notched 40 digs between the two matches.

The Islanders now face a short turnaround before heading to Sam Houston State on Tuesday night.
