SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi spirit teams wrapped up a weekend of competition at the Universal Cheer Association (UCA) and Universal Dance Association (UDA) camp held on the campus of Texas State University. The brought the gold superior ribbon back to the Island, which is an award for cheer, dance and mascot performances combined.
The Islanders Dance Team produced inspired results for the second year in a row, with all 21 dancers receiving a blue superior ribbon for their individual performances, which also earned the Blue and Green the superior trophy for a perfect individual score. The Islanders snagged the first-place trophy for their home routine and the gold superior trophy for the fight song performance. A&M-Corpus Christi added the Collegiate Image Award on the final day of the camp.
In addition to their strong performances in the competition, the dance team also participated in a class taught by Kendra Andrew, an actress who has appeared in STEP UP 3, Footloose and House.
To cap an excellent perfect weekend for the dancers, Carrie Fulgham, Joule Valdez, Samantha Schelnick, Alexis Padilla, Allie Mccaughey, Dominique Casey and Morgan Koteras received offers to join the UDA staff.
For the third consecutive year, the Islanders Cheer Squad compiled another impressive camp, garnering blue superior ribbons for the sideline and fight song evaluations. A staple of every home event on the Island, the cheer team picked up the Game Day Planning Award. The Islanders earned a pair of third-place trophies in the large co-ed division for their sideline and fight song performances.
Izzy the Islander also had a strong weekend in San Marcos. The Islanders mascot earned two blue superior ribbons in the mascot walk. Izzy wrapped up his impressive weekend with a superior trophy for his overall performance.
