"Hosting the event was a great success," Director of Track & Field Shawn Flanagan said. "We have a great facility, the officials were outstanding and the administrative support was great. Everyone did a good job of putting this on.
"On the competitive side we had some kids that really stood out," Flanagan went on to say. "Sashane in the high jump, Philipp in the steeple and the 5K and Hannah in the pole vault. We did some really good things."
Baar wasn't the only Islander to place in the top five on Sunday. Angelo Garland took fifth in the 400 meters after crossing the line in 47.94 seconds in the finals.
The men's team scored 31 total points to place 10th out of 12 teams in competition. The Islanders' 4x400 meter relay squad of David Carrillo, Will Maraggia, Javier Reyes and Garland scored five of those points with a fourth place finish, recording a time of 3:14.98.
Maraggia also scored in the 800 meters. He was seventh in Sunday's final with a time of 1:55.39. Steven Galli also earned points for his team, placing seventh in the 1500 meters, crossing the line in 3:59.90.
On the women's side, the Islanders placed 11 out of 13 teams, scoring 23 total points. The Blue and Green scored just three on Sunday, as freshman Diamond Thomas took sixth in the discus with a mark of 43.38 meters.
Both relay teams took 10th place, while Kaelin Simmons was just outside the scoring range – at ninth – in the discus. She recorded a distance of 40.57 meters.
"Overall, we're not where we want to be," Flanagan said. "We've made some moves. We're really recruiting hard. We need to get better. With this facility and with the staff we have assembled we're going to see some really solid improvements in our positioning in the conference."
