HOUSTON, Texas – In the second to last meet before the Southland Conference Championships to be held in Corpus Christi in May, the Islanders track & field team traveled to Houston to take part in the J. Fred Duckett Twilight at Rice.

Will Maraggia and Aaron Rosales both set new school records, while Liz Romo and the men's 4x400 meter relay team won their events on Saturday.
Maraggia placed second in the 800 meters with a record time of 1:50.46. Rosales's new record came in the hammer throw, where he recorded a mark of 43.84 meters and came in ninth place.
Romo won the 5,000 meters in Houston, crossing the line in 18:04.55. The men's 4x400 team of David Carrillo, Angelo Garland, Javier Reyes and Maraggia won in a season-best time of 3:12.37.
The men's team finished with 11 top five performances on the day, including two in the 1,500 meters and two in the 5,000 meters. Steven Galli took third in the 1,500 at 3:53.73, while Vinnie Van Puyvelde was fifth in 3:58.00.
Cesar Gonzalez was second in the 5,000, crossing the line in 14:52.58 and Daniel Guerrero was just behind him in third with a time of 14:56.63.
Ben Clark, Logan Robinson and Bjoern Adden placed fourth in three separate field events. Clark did it in the shot put with a mark of 14.46 meters, Robinson in the javelin at 45.82 meters, and Adden in the high jump with a height of 1.86 meters.
Logan Jorgensen finished fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.31 meters. Teammate Devin Nguyen took sixth in the event with an identical 4.31 meters, but missed more attempts.
The Islanders men's 4x100 meter relay team of Carrillo, Garland, Brandon Walls and Isaiah Patterson placed third with a time of 42.29 seconds.
The women's side totaled seven top five performances, including Romo's win in the 5,000. The only other instances on the track came from both relay teams.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Tashonna Williams, Shanice Prendergast, Olivia Williamson and Faith Williams placed fourth with a time of 4:03.19, while the 4x100 meter relay squad of Tevis Thomas, Williams, Williams and Williamson was fifth in 47.54 seconds.
Sashane Hanson and Adrienne Nickleson both took home third place performances on Saturday. The former was third in the high jump with a mark of 1.66 meters. The latter was third in the shot put, recording a distance of 13.26 meters.
Kaelin Simmons and Isabella Baptiste rounded out the top five finishers for the Islanders. Simmons was fourth in the discus with a mark of 42.93 meters, while Baptiste placed fifth in the javelin, recording a distance of 27.45 meters.
The Islanders will be back in action next weekend at the Baylor Invitational.
