Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Texas-Pan American

EDINBURG, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team split a doubleheader with Texas-Pan American Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Islanders fell in the opening game 11-1 in seven innings before taking the nightcap, 14-7. The Islanders and Broncs will play two more games this season in Corpus Christi on April 28.

Game One Recap
The Islanders (14-15) dropped their second-consecutive run-rule game, 11-1 to the Broncs to open Tuesday's action.

A&M-Corpus Christi started the afternoon with a quick run in the top of the first after Tyler Ware led the game off with a double to left field followed by a single by Casey Thomas. Ware would score on a pickoff attempt to first base that went out of play.

That would be all the Islanders could do in the series opener, as the team would reach base via the hit only three other times after the first.

Texas-Pan American (12-19) would answer the Islanders lone first inning run in the bottom half of the frame with three of their own.

The UTPA scoring barrage would continue in the fourth inning as the home team added six runs on six hits. The Broncs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the contest early.

Jared Jordan made his first start of the year for the Islanders on the mound, but would go just one inning after allowing three runs in the loss. The sophomore allowed only two hits but beamed two UTPA players in the inning, accompanied by a wild pitch to put the Broncs ahead.

In total, the Islanders relied on four pitchers. Senior Tyler Schnuriger tossed two and a third innings, Kaleb Keith went two and two third and Brian Allec threw just a third of the bottom of the seventh.

Ware was the only Islander to have a multi-hit day, finishing 2-for-3 while scoring the only run of the game.

Game Two Recap
Timely hits and situational hitting propelled the Islanders to a 14-7 win in the second game of the day. Zacarias Hardy and Casey Thomas let the way for the Islanders, both going 3-for-5 on the day.

A&M-Corpus Christi once again got off on the right foot, scoring the first run of the game in the second as Brandon Guilford's sacrifice fly out to deep right center scored from third after opening the frame being hit by a pitch.

The team would quickly regain the lead in the third inning as senior Kyle Danford, Hardy and Clarke each picking up doubles to put a three-spot on the scoreboard.

A&M-Corpus Christi broke the game open in the sixth and seventh innings, going for nine runs. The sixth featured four Islanders hits, including another double by Hardy as the team batted around the lineup.

Devin Skapura got the start for the Islanders and went three and two third innings, giving up four runs (one earned) and striking out five. Senior southpaw Trevor Belicek picked up the win for the Islander sin relief, improving his record to 5-2 on the year. Dalton D'Spain, Garrett Harris, Thomas Casey and Kevin Landgrebe finished off the game, each tossing one inning in the win.

The Islanders will return home this weekend as they play host Abilene Christian in a three-game series beginning Friday at Chapman Field.
