SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi track and field teams wrapped up this weekend's competition Saturday during the final day of the UIW Invitational.
"We had several good performances today," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "It was a hot day, but I felt as though we went out and competed. We have been training very hard lately, so I was pleased with the way our team pushed through."
Valentinas Rudys recorded the lone victory of the day for the Islanders, as he was the first runner to cross the finish line in the 1500-meters in a time of 4:01.77.
In the middle distance races, Sidney Siepert had the best day for A&M – Corpus Christi, as she placed seventh in the 800-meters, clocking a 2:21.09.
Ebony Collins led the way among the sprinters, running a personal record 11.86 in the 100m to finish third in the field. David Carrillo finished eighth for the men in the event, sprinting down the straight away in 10.77.
In the 400-meters, the Islanders had runners clock top 10 times on both the men's and women's side of things, as Javier Reyes came in eighth with his 49.44, while Ashley Rosebrough ran the fifth fastest lap in school history at 57.71 to finish seventh.
The Islanders were even strong in the 400 once obstacles were placed in the way, as both William Scott (54.68) and Jackson Davis (57.23) had strong showings in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing third and eighth, respectively.
Two men's relay teams posted the second fastest times in the meet, as both the 4x200 team (1:32.49) comprised of Dustin Smith, Daniel Rhodes, Rudys and Wesley McGhee, and the 4x400 (3:16.57) group made of Davis, Carrillo, Andres Salazar and Angelo Garland came in second.
Although most of the field events took place in day one of the meet, the Islanders did have a strong showing in the women's triple jump, as Marisa Ellis set a new personal record with a jump of 11.48m (37' 8") to finish second, while Natasha Atkins was just shy of her personal best, as she finished fifth with a leap of 11.00m (36' 1¼").
The track and field teams will now have another busy week ahead of them, as they will compete in the Mt. SAC Relays on April 17-18 in Walnut, Calif., as well as the Michael Johnson Classic on April 19 in Waco, Texas.
