The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Track and Field teams set numerous personal records on Friday, as they finished up competition in the Texas Relays, while participating in the Rice Bayou Classic for the first day.
"Our team did really good today, and I was pleased with their performances," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "Rice always treats us well, and it did so once again. We also had some good showings at the Texas Relays. Hopefully we can continue this success into tomorrow."
Most of the team's best accomplishments came in Houston, with the collegiate long distance races taking place during the night races. Even the delay due to severe weather could not slow the Islanders down, as nearly every runner set personal records on the night.
The highest finisher was Lara Huelsebusch, who was the first competitor across in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:14.75.
A&M – Corpus Christi also saw some terrific performances during both the men and women's 5000-meter races.
The best finish in the event came from Regina Salinas, as she set a new personal record with a time of 17:29.28 to finish second in the event. That mark was also the seventh fastest in Islanders' history. Also with a strong performance for the women was Brandie Garcia, as she saw a 30 second improvement on her fastest time, coming in at 18:32.39 to finish 13th.
Leading the way for the men was Justin Adame, as he cracked the top 10 with a sixth-place finish, clocking a time of 14:50.92. Christoph Hintz fell just outside of the first 10 across, as he was the 11th competitor to cross the line, finishing in 15:02.11.
Coming up with a huge personal record in the event was Daniel Guerrero, as he came in just behind Hintz at 13th, finishing in 15:08.50, knocking nearly 50 seconds off his old PR.
In the 1500m, Ann-Kathrin Ott was the top runner for the Islanders, as she came in 12th with a time of 4:53.00.
At the Texas Relays, the Islanders saw their best performances come in day one of action, as they had three top-10 performances in the long distance races.
Cecilia Jones and Paul Hansel both came in eighth in their races, as Jones did so in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing in 11:07.16, which was her best time in two years, while Hansel did so in his group of the 1500m with a time of 3:56.41.
For the men in the steeplechase, Philipp Baar struggled down the stretch after being on pace to break his personal record, but still managed to come in 10th by coming across in 9:18.25.
The top performances on Friday's events in Austin for the Islanders came in the women's 100m, as Ebony Collins finished in the top half of 85 competitors with a 12.05, while the men's 4x400 relay team was just a couple of ticks behind its school record, as it finished ahead of nine other teams with a time of 3:14.03.
The teams will be back in action with a host of Islanders competing in Saturday's events at the Rice Bayou Classic, including the first field events for the teams this week. The "B" sections of the races will start at noon, while the "A" sections start at 6 p.m. The field events will begin at 11 a.m. for the final day of action.
