SAN MARCOS, Texas – Sophomore Brandi Huff shattered her third school record this season to lead the women's track and field team Saturday at the Bobcat Classic at the Texas State University Track and Field Stadium.
"Brandi had a pretty good day," head coach Randy Bungard said. "She broke 40 meters in the javelin and broke the school record in the shot put. Brianeka Harris ran a good 200 and 100 and Courtney Padron qualified for the conference in the women's 400m hurdles."
Huff broke the shot put school record with a throw of 13.85m (45-05.25) to finish in the top 10 while improving her previous record-breaking throw of 13.69m (44-11.00) set at the Cactus Cup in March.
The sophomore placed third in the women's javelin with a qualifying mark of 40.18m (131-10), which is good for fifth place in the school records. She broke the school record in March at the Texas Relays with a distance of 42.86m (140-07). She also passed the qualifying standard in the women's high jump to finish just inside the top 10 with a clearance of 1.60m (5-03.00). Her mark is good for seventh in the Islanders records. Huff recorded a season-best jump of 1.63m (5-04.25) set at the Cactus Cup in March.
Jasmine Roberson also passed the qualifying mark on Friday in the women's javelin with a throw of 35.98m (118-00). She will take her season-best throw of 38.36m (125-10) set at the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight and compete at the Southland Conference Championships.
Sidney Siepert clocked a personal-best time of 2:18.22 in the women's 800m to improve her previous qualifying time of 2:18.93 set at the Texas State Invitational.
In the women's 100m, Harris clocked a personal-best qualifying time of 12.12 to finish in the top 10. Her time ties for eighth place in the school records. In the women's 200m, Harris finished with a time of 25.46.
Padron qualified in the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.17 to finish in the top 10. Felisha Salinas clocked a qualifying time of 1:06.11 to place in front of Padron in ninth place. Salinas qualified for the outdoor championships at the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight with a season-best time of 1:05.37.
Quincy Obeng and Patrick Scott both finished in the top 10 in the men's long jump and placed in the Islanders top 10 records. Obeng placed eighth with a mark of 6.70m (21-11.75) and Scott recorded a distance of 6.64m (21-09.50). Obeng will compete at the outdoor championships with his season-best qualifying jump of 6.90m (22-07.75) set at the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight.
Roger De La Cruz placed fourth in the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.05m (6-08.75). He holds the school record with a mark of 2.14m (7-00.25) set this season at the Texas Invitational.
William Scott finished sixth in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.83 to place in the Islanders top 10 records.
Cordarius Edmondson placed in the top 10 with a time of 49.06 in the men's 400m and two spots behind Edmondson was Matt Youngblood with a time of 49.35.
"We have a couple weeks to get it together and get everyone healthy for the conference outdoor championships," Bungard added.
The Islanders who have qualified will be competing at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on May 11-13 in San Marcos, Texas.
