Baylor Continues Streak With Win Over Islanders

WACO – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team ran into a juggernaut on Tuesday evening, falling 15-2 in seven inning against the #6 Baylor Bears. The Bears won their 20th-straight game while Baylor head coach Steve Smith won the 650th of his career.

The Islanders move to 15-21 on the year, while Baylor improves to 31-7 overall. Starter Trevor Belicek took the loss for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi to fall to 0-1 on the year. Belicek pitched 3.2 innings, giving up nine runs, five of them earned, on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Matt Danton, Trevor Foss, Jake Dziubczynski and Tanner Green also pitched in relief.

Jordan Lee and Stafford Brantley led the Islanders with two hits apiece. Each player had a single and a double on the night, as they totaled four of the six hits in the game for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.

Belicek struggled early on, giving up four runs in the first inning, including a three-run home run the left field that made it a 4-0 game.

The Bears added a single run in the third inning, as a single was followed by a triple that Stafford Brantley nearly made a diving catch on, but could not hold onto it when he was fully extended as he came down on the warning track. The run made it 5-0 through three innings.

In the fourth inning, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi would put two runs on the board, both with two outs in the inning, to cut the lead to 5-2. Lee started things off with the first hit of the game for the Islanders, and then stole second to move into scoring position. Eric Weiss then singled home Lee, and was followed by a Brantley RBI double to the right field wall that brought Weiss around from first to make it a 5-2 game.

Baylor would add four more runs in the bottom half of the inning, all of them unearned, to push the advantage to 9-2.

The Islanders threatened in the fifth, loading the bases on a Jeramie Marek walk, a Brad Porras hit-by-pitch and a Dan Sciantarelli single, all with no outs, but they were unable to bring any runs in to keep the score at 9-2.

The Bears would cap off the scoring in the sixth inning, plating six runs, five of which were unearned, to make it a 15-2 game.

Due to the run-rule being in effect, the game ended in a 15-2 final after seven innings.

The two teams will finish up their two-game set on Wednesday, with a 4:05 p.m. first pitch at Baylor Ballpark. Jacob Dorris will get the start for the Islanders, while Baylor has not yet named a starter for the game.
