AUSTIN, Texas – Junior Patrick Kimeli won the men's 1500m race and sophomore Brandi Huff broke her own school record in the javelin to highlight the first of three days at the 85th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Islanders men's and women's track and field teams competed in seven events today in Austin.
"Overall Brandi had a huge improvement in the javelin and Patrick is looking really good at the right time," Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan said.
Kimeli won the 1500m with a time of 3:49.03, which marks his second fastest time in the 1500m. The junior clocked a 3:48.41 at last season's Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, which sits in second place all-time. Kimeli is one spot behind record holder Shadrack Songok's time of 3:46.24, set back in 2006 at the Texas Relays.
Philipp Baar competed in section B of the 1500m. The freshman finished in fifth place with a time of 3:57.07 to qualify for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
Huff broke her own school record in the javelin to place fourth in the event. The sophomore marked a distance of 42.86m (140-07) which breaks her mark of 40.44m (132-08) set at the Cactus Cup earlier this month.
In the women's 1500m, senior Danielle Higgins clocked a time of 4:40.83 to qualify for the outdoor championships. The senior was just two seconds off her time of 4:38.13 at the Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University. Her time places seventh in the record book.
William Scott started the day for the Islanders in the men's 400m hurdles with a fifth-place finish. The sophomore finished with a time of 54.55, which is good for fifth place in the Islanders record book.
The men's 4x800 relay team of freshmen Valentinas Rudys, Brandon Lacy, Paul Hansel and Cordarius Edmondson finished in 11th place with a time of 7:38.56. The freshmen were the first Islanders to compete in the event this season.
"I'm happy with our 4x800 relay team," Flanagan added. "Other than our one leg, the freshmen had a good performance."
In the women's 3000m steeplechase, Cecilia Gonzalez place fourth with a time of 11:10.68. Her time qualifies for the outdoor championships and is good for eighth place all-time. Melissa Jones also competed in the event, clocking a time of 12:01.96, to also qualify for the conference championships.
