KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's track team dominated Saturday, clinching its third straight IBC Bank Cactus Cup title and the men's team came from behind to place second at Javelina Stadium. Despite strong winds, the Islanders had several runners advance to the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
"The women's team had a great performance all around and the men's team swept the top four spots in the 800m," Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan said. "We brought the trophy over and brought it back home."
Sophomore Brandi Huff had a record-breaking day in her first outdoor meet of the season and qualified for the outdoor championships in all three of the events she competed in. Huff broke the school record in the shot put and the javelin and took the top spots in both events and finished second in the high jump. The Rockport-Fulton native placed first in the shot put with a distance of 13.69m (44-11.00) and in the javelin with a throw of 40.44m (132-08). She came in second place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.63m (5-04.25).
Ashley Rosebrough also had a stellar day with two first-place finishes to advance to the outdoor championships. The sophomore finished first in the 100m and 200m dash. Rosebrough clocked a time of 11.98 in the 100m to move into second place in the record books and finished with a time of 24.72 in the 200m, which is also good for second place in the books.
Freshman Jasmin Boutte qualified with a first-place finish in the 800m dash with a time of 2:17.45. Danielle Higgins placed three spots behind Boutte with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line with a time of 2:20.86.
Junior BreAnna Briggs qualified in two events, posting a first place and second-place finish in both of her events. Briggs placed second in the 1500m to qualify with a time of 4:47.74. Higgins finished behind Briggs with a time of 4:50.52 and Julia Sambu posted a sixth-place finish with a time of 5:03.59. In the 5000m, Briggs clocked a time of 18:27.85 to take the top spot. Freshman Vanessa Galindo finished in second, crossing the line with a time of 18:29.80 to qualify, as well.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Cecilia Gonzalez and Melissa Jones both advanced with first and third place finishes, respectively. Gonzalez posted a time of 11:30.47 for first place while Jones finished with a time of 12:35.28 for third place.
Kassandrea Son qualified in all three of her events. She sealed the top spot in the long jump and finished second in the triple jump while finishing fifth in the high jump. Ernestine Cray advanced in two out of her three events. She posted a third-place finish in the long jump and defended her title in the triple jump with a first-place finish.
In the long jump, Son marked a distance of 5.92m (19-05.25) while Cray finished with a mark of 5.61m (18-05.00). Brianeka Harris also competed in the long jump, finishing in ninth with a distance of 4.93m (16-02.25).
Cray sealed the top spot in the triple jump with a mark of 12.42m (40-09.00) while Son's mark of 12.14m (39-10.00) was good for second place. Jontavia Dailey finished in sixth with a distance of 10.86m (35-07.75).
In the high jump, along with Huff's second-place finish, Son marked a clearance of 1.63m (5-4.25) for fifth place to advance to the outdoor championships.
The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Rosebrough, Son, Cray and Harris swept the top spot with a time of 47.75. The 4x400 meter relay team of Sidney Siepert, Courtney Padron, Shannon Girdy and Felisha Salines posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:04.75.
Jasmine Roberson finished with a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 11.10m (36-05.00) while advancing to the outdoor championships in the discus with a throw of 37.18m (122-00).
On the men's side, the Islanders finished behind host Texas A&M - Kingsville. The men's team highlighted the meet in the 800m, taking the top four spots. Patrick Kimeli defended his first-place finish from a year ago with a time of 1:55.99. Freshman Valentinas Rudys placed second, clocking a time of 1:56.20 while freshman Brandon Lacy finished in third with a time of 1:56.95. Freshman Philipp Baar rounded out the top four with a time of 1:57.14.
Kimeli advanced to the outdoor championships with a first-place finish in the 1500m run. He clocked a time of 3:58.71 to move on while freshman Paul Hansel finished in fifth place with a time of 4:01.93. The Islanders came back in the 5000m run and the 3000m steeplechase to finish ahead of Angelo State. Freshman Angel Banda sealed the top spot in the 5000m run with a time of 15:25.72 to advance to the outdoor championships and Jason Garcia placed fifth with a time of 15:55.77.
Hansel and junior Jacob Abrego clinched the top two spots in the 3000m steeplechase to advance to the championships. Hansel finished first with a time of 10:03.16 and Abrego crossed the line in 10:10.10.
William Scott will compete at the outdoor championships after posting a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.24. Roger De La Cruz placed sixth with a time of 59.66.
The men's relay teams finished third and fifth. In the 4x100 meter relay, the team of Youngblood, Patrick Scott, Dallas Crain and David Carrillo placed fifth with a time of 42.40. The team of Youngblood, Carrillo, William Scott and Cordarius Edmondson posted a third-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay in 3:21.91.
Quincy Obeng and De La Cruz both advanced to the championships in the high jump. De La Cruz picked up the victory with a clearance of 2.05m (6-08.75) while Obeng tied for second with a mark of 1.95m (6-04.75). Obeng also competed in the long jump to finish in fourth with a distance of 6.69m (21-11.50).
The Islanders will next be in action on Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24, at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas.
