Laredo - Texas A&M - Corpus Christi opened the outdoor portion of their schedule on a warm and windy day at the annual Border Olympics. Patrick Kimeli won the 1500m in dramatic fashion passing former Islanders great Shadrack Songok in the home stretch finishing with a time of 4:01.12.
Several members of the Islanders women's team meet the qualifying standards for the conference outdoor meet. Ernestine Cray qualified in the 200m dash with a time of 24.99 seconds, just missing out was Ashley Rosebrough with a time of 25.35 seconds.
Danielle Higgins and Kristine Torres went one and two in the 1500m went Texas A&M - Corpus Christi finished first, second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. BreAnna Briggs finished first in the 3000m with a time of 10:40.99 five others also qualified in the event also.
Rosebrough also finished third in the 100m dash with a mark 12.31 seconds.
On the men's side Eric July qualified in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.82 seconds and finished third just missing the qualifying time of 21.84 seconds posting a 22.19 mark.
In addition to the victory in the 1500m Kimeli finished third in the 800m with a time of 1:56.11.
Five Islanders qualified in the 3000m on Saturday and in the 400m hurdles Billy Scott finished second with a time of 57.60 seconds.
Elsewhere Kassandrea Son finished fifth in the long jump in Blacksburg, Va. with a mark of 5.73m just missing out on qualifying for the indoor national meet.
Next up for the Islanders will be the Cactus Cup on Saturday, March 19 in Kingsville.
