AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 54 Texas A&M -
Corpus Christi men's tennis team lost a 7-0 final to the No. 5
Texas Longhorns on Tuesday night on the road.
"No doubt this is one of the best four or five
teams in Division I and a team capable of winning the national
championship," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "It takes four
points to win one of these tennis matches, and we had an
opportunity to win four points had we just risen up a little
more.
"There is very little margin for error against
a team this good."
The Islanders are now 6-5 on the year, losing
for the first time in the last six matches. The Longhorns improve to 11-1 on the
season with the win.
"You've got to play every point with
intensity and you won't get a lot of second chances," said Moore.
"When you have an opportunity, you better rise up and grab it.
"We're learning and getting better every week.
We got beat by a better team today, give them credit."
In doubles action, the team of Laurent
Montoisy and Gergo Weidinger came close to upsetting the No.
27-ranked doubles team of Kellen Damico and David Holiner before
falling by an 8-6 final at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Robert Raguz and
Nathan Robinson lost 8-4 to Chris Camillone and Vasko Mladenov
while James Langford and Aurelien Tave also lost an 8-4 match to
Alex Hilliard and Daniel Whitehead at the No. 3 position.
In singles matches, the Islanders had several
close matches, but were unable to pull out a win against the
Longhorns. The closest
came at No. 6 singles where Weidinger won the first set before
losing in a three-set tiebreak 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 to Sudanwa Sitaram
after being up 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
"Our guys competed as hard as you can ask,"
said Moore. "We just didn't rise up when we had some chances.
"There is a big difference between competing
hard and competing with freedom. We have to stay loose at key
times, and that's our job as coaches to teach them how to do
that."
No. 5 singles had Matt Westmoreland losing a
6-3, 7-6 (7-3) final against Holiner. Tave lost a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) final to
Whitehead at the No. 4 position. No. 1 singles had Montoisy falling
6-1, 6-2 to No. 91-ranked Ed Corrie while Langford lost 6-1, 6-0 to
No. 61 Damico at the No. 2 spot. Raguz lost his match against No. 93
Mladenov 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.
"They
say you're either winning or you're learning. Today we did some
learning," said Moore. "This group has a lot of character and is
getting better every week.
"We may have lost today, but I'm extremely
excited about what these next two and a half months hold. If we get
to see another one of these types of matches in May, we may not let
our four points slip away."
Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is
the HEB Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday. The Islanders will host No. 45
Maryland, No. 46 New Mexico, No. 50 BYU, No. 52 DePaul, Purdue,
Middle Tennessee and Western Michigan in the event. Matches begin at 9 a.m. on Friday
morning at the HEB Tennis Center.
