Josh Washington
wanted to make sure his name will be written in the Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi record book and did so by draining eight
three-pointers that led to a game-high 28 points in the Islanders'
91-72 win over Texas-Arlington. The victory snapped the Mavericks'
Southland Conference high five-game win streak.
Washington now holds the record for three-pointers made in a game
and now has 75 3-pointers for his career, which is also a school
record. Four of his eight
three's came within the first six minutes of the game and hit the
go-ahead shot from beyond the arc to put the Islanders up for
good.
Seth Engelken was
into the scoring barrage with 19 points as he and Washington both
set career highs. The
Islanders (20-5, 11-1) shot 52 percent from the field for their
fourth-straight win as they continue to sit atop the Southland
Conference standings.
The Islanders,
leading by five at the half used a 15-2 run with under 10 minutes
to play to pull away, as they held an 83-61 advantage with 4:13 to
play. It was the substantial run
A&M-Corpus Christi was able to make as both teams exchanged
buckets for most of the first half.
The Islanders
managed an 8-2 lead with 12:59 to play that gave them a 16-11 lead
which they would not relinquish. Despite going without a field goal for
nearly five minutes in the first half, the Islanders hit
six-straight free-throws during that span to keep their five-point
cushion. A&M-Corpus
Christi hit a school-record 22-straight free throws on the game and
finished 26-of-31 from the charity stripe.
The Mavericks did
not score their first field goal of the second half until Larry
Posey converted a layup with 16:46 and by that time, the Islanders
enjoyed a 52-40 lead. UTA's
Rodrick Epps had a team-high 17 points, hitting just three field
goals, but was 10-of-10 at the line. He was the only Maverick to score in
double figures.
Engelken scored
five-straight points midway through the second half, hitting a
three-pointer followed by a layup to give the Islanders a 66-48
lead with 10:03 to play. He
finished the game shooting 6-of-10 from the field with three
3-point baskets and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.
TAMUCC's Cedric
Smith also finished in double-figures with 10 points with six
rebounds and a block.
The Islanders will
take their four-game win streak to Beaumont Thursday night to face
Lamar at 7 p.m.
