Terry Johnson came to The Island University in 2014. Johnson joined the Islanders staff as Director of Basketball Operations after spending one season at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. During his year at UST, he helped guide the team to a 20-11 record and a second place finish in the Red River Athletic Conference. UST also earned a second consecutive trip to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City.
From Sept. 2016 to April 2021, Johnson served as Assistant Coach for the men's basketball program under Head Coach Willis Wilson. Johnson remained on staff as Director of Basketball Operations in May 2021 under Head Coach Steve Lutz.
Johnson is well known for his ability to communicate and build relationships, especially with student athletes. A student of the game with tremendous work ethic, he has also been integral of the success at basketball programs, both as a coach and a player.

With Johnson on staff, the Islanders enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in 2015-16. The lslanders advanced to the Southland Conference Championship game for the first time since 2007, then again 2016-2017.Â

Johnson’s responsibilities have included a variety of administrative tasks surrounding team travel, camps, housing, gear and equipment, scouting, recruiting and player development. Well respected throughout college basketball, Johnson is an assistant coach on the rise.

A basketball junkie by no surprise, he’s been exposed to winning at all levels of college basketball. His father is Trent Johnson former head coach at Nevada, Stanford, LSU and TCU.

Johnson is a member of the NABC, NAFCED and TABC. He played high school basketball at Reno High School, collegiate basketball at Moorpark Community College and Cal State University of Stanislaus, where he was a captain at all 3 levels. He graduated from Moorpark Junior College with an associate degree in Physical Education and then California State Stanislaus in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology.

Johnson is the son of Trent and Jackie Johnson, brother of Tinishia, who is a former Arizona State Track and Field standout, and an uncle to three girls, LaRee (9), LyNece (6) and Layla (4).
