LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team wrapped up the Red Raider Invitational, hosted by Texas Tech, on Wednesday, posting a total score of 905 (+41) to finish in the middle of the pack.
The Islanders competed on both Tuesday and Wednesday, playing two rounds on the former before concluding the tournament with one last round on the latter. By the time the week came to an end, they ended up in seventh place out of 12 teams, placing ahead of Southland Conference rivals UIW and Stephen F. Austin and just two strokes behind Houston Christian.
The first day of the event was the strongest for A&M-Corpus Christi, starting things out with a +12 in the first round and then following that up right after with an improvement down to +11. The team finished in fifth overall for both rounds, ranking ahead of Sam Houston and HCU in the former and HCU and New Mexico in the latter, all of whom finished higher in the overall standings.
The Islanders' best individual performer was again
Samantha Gibbs, who found herself at the top of the team's leaderboard for a third straight event after posting a +6 overall to finish in a tie for 11
th out of 68 athletes. Gibbs improved steadily in each round that she played, going from a +3 in the opener to a +2 right after and settling in at a +1 to close things out on Wednesday. Included in this was a -1 back nine in the middle round as well as a -2 across the same holes in round three, her best showing of the tournament.
Next up for A&M-Corpus Christi was
Corrina Haros, who came in a tie for 20
th with a +10 overall that was aided greatly by a nice +2 in the first round. Right behind her was
Salysa Mason, who made her Islanders debut during the event and finished in the top half of the field with a +12 in total.
Abir Taibi came in right behind Mason with a +13 to finish tied for 33
rd, and
Hannah Creekmore rounded out the group at +17.
The Islanders will now take some time to ready up for their final event on the fall calendar, closing things out for the semester at the Diamante Intercollegiate in Hot Springs, Arkansas on October 18-20.
