FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team split a two-match day at the TCU Beach Volleyball Courts, narrowly falling 3-2 to FGCU before responding with a dominant 5-0 sweep of Houston Christian in the conference opener.
A&M-Corpus Christi battled FGCU in the morning dual, with the teams going to three sets of three of the courts before the Eagles secured the deciding point. The Islanders bounced back later in the day, winning all five courts against HCU to begin conference play with a statement victory.
The Islanders picked up two wins in a tightly contested dual against FGCU, highlighted by strong performances at the top and bottom flights. At No. 1,
Madison Morrow and
Kristin Bobay earned a straight-sets victory 21-14, 22-20, giving the Islanders one of their two points on the day.
The Islanders' other win came at No. 5, where
Bryce Ranney and
Mille Maxwell-Berthou outlasted FGCU in a three-set thriller, 21-19, 16-21, 22-20. FGCU secured the dual with wins on courts two, three and four.
The Islanders quickly regrouped for their conference opener against HCU and delivered a sweep, capturing all five courts.
The Islanders struck early on court five as
Mia Stevens and
Saskia Hernandez won 21-14, 21-12 to give A&M-Corpus Christi the first point of the dual.
Bryce Ranney and
Mille Maxwell-Berthou followed with a straight-sets win at No. 4, 21-11, 21-17, before
Madison Morrow and
Kristin Bobay clinched it court one with a 21-15, 21-14 victory.
The Islanders added a fourth point with a win at No. 2, where Duda Fernandes de Mello and
Millie Olsson defeated their opponent 22-20, 21-16. Court three wrapped up the sweep as
Lizzie Denyer and
Ashlyn Rough battled to a 21-13, 19-21, 17-15 win over Paige Palmer and Grace Melnick.
