THIBODAUX, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team dropped the second game of its Louisiana road trip on Saturday afternoon, starting out slow and getting taken down by Nicholls by a final score of 69-42 after being unable to fight its way back.
The Islanders (4-18, 3-12 SLC) ran into their biggest struggles offensively in the game's opening quarter, scoring just five points on the Colonels (11-11, 7-8 SLC) over the first 10 minutes of the afternoon and falling behind by double digits as a result. Despite a nice and-one drawn by sophomore
Rayna Williams to kick off the second quarter, this deficit would climb up to 25 by the 4:43 mark of the frame, at which point a long midrange jumper by redshirt sophomore
Torie Sevier would get A&M-Corpus Christi back on the board. Another basket by Sevier and some free throws from Williams and senior
Marissa Shelton helped increase the team's tally before the break, but it would still go into the locker room down 38-16.
The third quarter would go much better on offense for the Islanders, as they came close to matching their production from the first two periods with 14 points on 3-7 shooting and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. These shots from the charity stripe were converted by four different members of the team as well, with Shelton, Williams, junior
Asha Walker and senior
Bruna Anguera all drawing fouls and converting twice in a row. Unfortunately for the team, however, Nicholls kept its strong day on the other side rolling out of the break, pouring in 16 of its own to put the visitors down 54-30 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Like in the third, the Islanders played close with the Colonels in the final quarter, scoring 12 on 5-11 shooting while holding Nicholls to no field goals over the final 4:36 of the game. Sevier was a big factor during this span, putting in five points on an and-one and another made basket on offense and swatting two shots on the other side to provide a two-way presence. Even with this, though, the team could not put together the extended run it needed and came up short as a result.
In the scoresheet, Sevier led the Islanders on the day, with the center scoring 11 points on 5-10 shooting while also grabbing four rebounds and tallying four blocks to match her career high set all the way back on November 13, 2023 against Schreiner just her third-ever game at the collegiate level. Also reaching double figures was Shelton, who did so by knocking down 3-6 shots from the field and 3-5 from the free throw line overall. Outside of scoring, graduate
Chelsea Wooten managed to grab a game-high nine rebounds, and redshirt senior
Trinity Slocum led all players in assists with six.
The Islanders will now head back home for a pair of contests against two of the Southland's best next week, starting first with a matchup with Stephen F. Austin on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Hilliard Center.
