Lowth, Green Earn SLC Men's Track, Women's Field Athlete of the Week Awards

FRISCO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field team had two of its members earn Southland Conference weekly honors for the final voting period of the indoor season, as it was announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon that sophomore Kye Lowth and senior Cyan Green were named the Men's Track Athlete and Women's Field Athlete of the Week respectively.

"I'm very excited for Kye and Cyan getting their first conference recognition of the year," Islanders head coach Bryan Jackson said. "It's much deserved for both of them. They are both looking in tremendous form going into championships."

Lowth earned the award off the strength of his history-making performance at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston last Friday, where he finished the 3000m with a blazing-fast time of 8:05.80. This broke the old program record in the event set by national champion and A&M-Corpus Christi Hall of Honor inductee Shadrack Songok, which had stood for nearly 18 years after Songok clocked a time of 8:08.81 at the 2008 Southland Conference Indoor Championships. Lowth's performance over the weekend also currently stands as the best in the conference and the 11th best in the South Central Region so far this season.

On the same day that Lowth put together his strong effort, Green took home a second-place finish in the weight throw at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston, doing so by reaching a mark of 19.48m on her fifth toss of the day. This was the best throw of the week in the Southland Conference and the third-best overall this season, behind only two of her own from earlier in the year. Green also ranks third in the South Central Region in the event this year, nine spots above the second-highest competitor in the conference.

The pair of weekly honors are the first for the track & field team since May 7 of last season, when current junior Emmanuel Ekuma took home Men's Field Athlete of the Week during outdoor season. Green's award this week is the third of her career after she won two combined between indoor and outdoor seasons last year, while Lowth's is the first for his young career.

Lowth and Green will both try to carry this momentum into the most important meet of the season to date next week, as them and the rest of the Islanders will compete in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on February 25 and 26 in Birmingham, Alabama.
