CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team returns home for matchups against a pair of teams near the top of the Southland Conference standings this week, first taking on Stephen F. Austin on Thursday at 7 p.m. before then hosting Lamar on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Islanders (4-18, 3-12 SLC) start the homestand with their second showdown against the Ladyjacks (16-8, 10-5 SLC) this season, with the first going the way of SFA by a final score of 84-62 in Nacogdoches back on December 17 in the final game before the holiday break. Senior
Samora Watson led the way for the team in scoring on that day with 13, and graduate
Chelsea Wooten stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists to come just shy of the first triple-double in program history. Redshirt senior
Trinity Slocum also had a solid showing in that contest as well, getting into double figures for her first time on the season with 10 points against the squad that she played for back in the 2023-24 campaign. A&M-Corpus Christi will be trying to snap a six-game losing streak against SFA, with its last win in the series coming in the semifinals of the 2019 Southland Conference Basketball Championships.
After this, the Islanders will look for revenge against the Cardinals (14-8, 11-4 SLC), whom they were defeated by in Beaumont back on December 15 by a final of 77-49. They played Lamar close on its home court for the first half of that game, trailing by just two going into the break, but a second-half slide ended up sending them to what was their first conference loss of the season. Marissa Shelton paced the offense, as both poured in 13 while shooting 50 percent from the field on the day. Like SFA, the last time that the Islanders knocked off the Cardinals came in the semifinals of the conference tournament, with this win happening in 2024 on their way to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
