SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team opens its 2026-27 season tomorrow night as they travel to take on Texas State. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip as the Islanders enter their fourth season under head coach
Jim Shaw.
The Islanders and the Bobcats are meeting for the 21st time in program history. The two sides have split the previous 20 meetings 10-10, with Texas State winning the last four matchups. They last met in the 2020-21 season, when they played a home-and-home series.
The Islanders are coming off a season where they went 18-15 overall and 13-9 in Southland Conference play. The Bobcats were 19-13 last season and 11-7 in the Sun Belt, but Texas State transitions into their first season in the new Pac-12. The Islanders were picked to finish third in the Southland Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Bobcats were picked to finish seventh in the Pac-12.
Corpus Christi returns just four players from last year's squad and brings back a total of just 13.1 points per game. They brought in twelve newcomers, nine transfers and three high schoolers to bolster their rotation. The Bobcats return six players from last season's team, including their top four leading scorers.
Daniel Michelini-Jackson and
Bryson Wheatfall are the main returners for the Islanders. Michelini-Jackson made 12 starts and averaged 5.5 points per game, with a season-high 28 points against New Orleans in the SLC Tournament. Wheatfall made five starts as a true freshman and scored 3.6 ppg for the Islanders.
The Islanders are 21-5 all-time in season openers, but failed to win a non-conference game on the road last season, playing at SMU, Oklahoma State, Tarleton State, Kansas, and Xavier.
The Islanders have the second-best winning percentage in the Southland starting from the 2023-24 season, winning 65 percent of their conference game. They have won 59 games since 2023, the third most in the state of Texas among 18 non-power four men's basketball programs in the state of Texas.
