Women's Basketball Splits Week at Home Against UTRGV, On Road at UIW

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team splits its two games at home and on the road this week, first starting out with a matchup against UTRGV at the Hilliard Center on Thursday at 7 p.m. before then embarking on a trip up to San Antonio to face Incarnate Word on Saturday at 1 p.m., a time that is subject to change due to inclement weather in the forecast.

The Islanders (3-13, 2-7 SLC) secured a big win in their most recent game last Saturday, taking down Southeastern by a final score of 68-65 to get back on the right side of the ledger for the second time in conference play. The victory was spearheaded primarily by an outstanding third quarter, with the team ripping off a 15-0 run at one point and outscoring the Lady Lions 22-5 in the period in total to take a lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the afternoon. Individually, A&M-Corpus Christi was led by senior K'Nari Holliday and redshirt senior Trinity Slocum, with the former posting her second double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four blocks and the latter doing it all with six points, six rebounds and a career-high 10 assists.

Now looking to carry this momentum forward, the Islanders start the week with a rematch against the Vaqueros (9-9, 6-3 SLC) in the second leg of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union. The first meeting came back on January 3 in Edinburg, where A&M-Corpus Christi played to a one-point halftime lead on the road but ultimately faded down the stretch and fell by a score of 58-47. Senior Samora Watson led the team on the day with 15 points, while senior Marissa Shelton and sophomore Rayna Williams each paced the group with six rebounds apiece.

A&M-Corpus Christi then hits the road for the first game of a rare back-to-back against the Cardinals (8-8, 6-3 SLC), with the two teams also squaring off next Thursday at the Hilliard Center immediately following Saturday's game. The Islanders have historically dominated the matchup against UIW, holding an overall record of 21-4 dating back to 2009, but they dropped both meetings last season to snap what had been an 11-game winning streak coming in. The most recent game between the two on February 15 of last year was also the last overtime game that the Islanders have played, where they fell in the extra period by a final of 63-55 despite a team-high 12 points from Watson off the bench.

Both games can be watched live on ESPN+, while Saturday's contest can be listened to live on 1440 AM K-E-Y-S with Doug Kesterson on the call.
