Women's Basketball Starts Homestand With Matchups Against McNeese, Southeastern

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team rolls along with its conference schedule at home this week, welcoming McNeese to the Hilliard Center on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Coming off a pair of defeats at the hands of East Texas A&M and Northwestern State in their most recent road trip, the Islanders (2-12, 1-6 SLC) are looking to get back in the win column for the first time since their most recent home game against New Orleans on New Year's Eve, where they triumphed by a final score of 85-54 to pick up their first conference victory of the season. Last week did see standout individual performances from the team in both contests, with redshirt sophomore Torie Sevier putting together a 22-point, nine-rebound performance against the Lions last Thursday and senior Samora Watson following this with 22 points against the Lady Demons on Saturday to move her average on the season up to 13.5 points per game, which ranks sixth in the conference.

A&M-Corpus Christi now starts the homestand by hosting the Cowgirls (12-4, 6-1 SLC), who come into play riding a five-game win streak dating back to December 29 that has propelled them to the top of the Southland Conference standings. The Islanders dropped both meetings to McNeese last season but did pick up a win in their most recent game against this specific group, as they earned a 54-52 victory on March 1 of last year over current Cowgirls head coach Ayla Guzzardo and nine of her current players when they were all at Southeastern, snapping what had been a 19-game winning streak at the time. This win ultimately helped the team clinch its spot in the Southland Conference Basketball Championship for the fourth year in a row and seventh in the past eight possible seasons.

After this, the Islanders then face off with Guzzardo's old Lady Lions (2-12, 1-6 SLC) squad, who currently hold an identical record to A&M-Corpus Christi in their first season under head coach Jeff Dow, who previously worked in the same role at UIW. The aforementioned win at the end of last season helped the Islanders split the season series with Southeastern, which subsequently gave them the lead in the all-time series with a record of 15-14 dating back all the way to 2001. The visitors on Saturday will bring in a familiar face to the Hilliard Center, as guard Natalie Huff comes back to town averaging 7.6 points and 3.7 assists per game in her first season with the Lady Lions after redshirting in 2024-25 with the Islanders.

Both games can be watched live on ESPN+ with Doug Kesterson on the call.
