FRISCO, Texas – Adding yet another accolade to her mantle, sophomore
Elizabeth Khatevi of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's cross country team was named the Southland Conference Women's Runner of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The honor is Khatevi's second in a row after also winning Runner of the Week for the season's opening period back on September 2 and the third of her young cross country career dating back to last season. The Kenya native becomes the first Islander in any sport to take home honors in consecutive weeks since Zoe Theriot of the soccer team won Goalkeeper of the Week on August 20 and 27 of last year.
Khatevi was recognized for her performance at the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational on September 5, where she took home first place in the women's 5k with a time of 16:36.8, which broke her own school record in the event by nearly 10 whole seconds. The win was her second in as many meets to start the year after also doing so at Cross Country at the Seashore on September 29 and her third in a row when dating back to last year's Southland Conference Championships. In addition, Khatevi helped the Islanders to a dominant win as a team, finishing 35 points clear of second-place TCU.
"I am very proud of Elizabeth for the season she is having so far," head coach
Bryan Jackson said. "It's been a great start for her and this entire women's team!"
Khatevi and the rest of the Islanders will race next on September 26, traveling to Columbia, Missouri to compete in the Gans Creek Classic, hosted by the University of Missouri.
