Islanders Tennis: 16 Straight Championship Seasons

May 12, 2025

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis programs have achieved historic success since their conceptions 26 years ago, and the men's and women's teams have shown no signs of slowing down in their championed excellence as the 2025 season extended a 16-year stretch of championships.

Both the men's and women's tennis teams won the Southland Conference regular season championship this season, further cementing themselves as the winningest tennis teams in conference history and two of the winningest programs across all sports in the 62-year history of conference.

For the men, the Islanders secured their 13th all-time regular season title for now 23 total championships. They are one of the winningest teams in the Southland Conference, across all sports. The women won their third consecutive regular season title and seventh overall this year. It took their championship total to 14 combined with their seven conference tournament titles.

The teams have been to the prestigious NCAA Championships, the ultimate metric of success, a record-breaking 17 times.

Both teams hold conference tennis records in regular season titles, conference tournament titles, and NCAA tournament appearances.

To make it more impressive, this year's two titles marked the 16th consecutive season that Islanders Tennis took home a championship between the two teams, helping total now an astounding 37 championships in program's history.

"The Islanders Tennis culture is truly special and the root of any success," said head coach Steve Moore. "It's family, character, discipline, and team unity. The best part, though, is the relationship between players and coaches which is built for life! Those lifelong relationships are more special than any championship or trophy. We fight for each other and stick together on the court for the rest of our lives because it's about making the team a family with actions, not talk, coaching and mentoring these great kids beyond tennis.

"Our "character first" and "real world training" philosophy is another key to success! We believe loving these kids means teaching the TRUTH of what it takes to succeed in the real world: to be leaders in their families, communities, and jobs! Successful organizations want people who embody a team-first mentality, constant encouragement, integrity, character, outworking people, accountability, and discipline! Most job interviews don't go well if you say, "it's all about me and my experience," so you're not doing kids any favors by promoting that in college. We overemphasize character-first values because that's really loving our players and setting them up for success on the court and for life after! Players who share those values continue to gravitate to Islanders Tennis, and that creates a special culture that elevates everyone! It makes us excited to drive to work every day because of these great kids and that great culture! Also vitally important has been the support we've received from our president and athletic administration! You can never have sustained success without great support from great leaders! I also believe the donors who support Islanders Tennis are the best in the nation!" said Moore.

Moore has been the guiding force for 35 of those championships, including 16 trips to the NCAA Tournament. That is the most NCAA appearances at the same school by a head coach all-time in Southland Conference history, across all sports and all coaches.
